History Note


In the mid-19th century, Cathy Williams went West with her mother, Martha, and both were involved in action during the Civil War. After the war, Cathy changed her name to William Cathey and in her new guise, she joined the U.S. 10th Cavalry. She served for two years as a Buffalo Soldier, and received an award for bravery.
